We spoke with Keith Hanrahan, Commercial Manager of McLarens Aviation’s Risk and Asset Management division, to find out about his professional background, favorite experience with McLarens, and advice for someone beginning their adjusting career.

What has been one of the most interesting or rewarding experiences you have had at McLarens Aviation?

During my time in the aviation sector, I have had the perspective of a major global operator, a regulatory authority, a major aviation trade association, and the European Commission working on SESAR/NEXTGEN. From a professional development stand-point, my goal was to find a position where I could leverage that knowledge and experience – a role that required elements of all those disciplines. When I joined McLarens Aviation in October 2017, I immediately felt that I had made the right decision. I work with some of the most qualified and able colleagues I’ve come across in 30 years, and have immediately felt part of a great team. Whilst my role is predominantly commercial, it requires me to draw on all my previous experience, whether engineering, regulations and standards, and the ability to engage to with military and government organisations, which brings a unique set of requirements. For these reasons and many more I have been delighted with my first year with the company. It’s been a rewarding experience already, and I am looking forward to contributing to the company’s success going forward. I couldn’t be happier.

What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have a personal passion?

I play golf, although not as well as I would like, and also watch my football team, Chelsea, play whenever I can.

What advice would you give someone starting out in this field or considering it as a career option?

I have had a wonderful career encompassing many aspects of aviation, and if I was just starting out I would do the same again without hesitation. It has given me the privilege of working with some of the most clever and interesting people all over the world, and I hope that in some small way I have contributed to the success of the industry. I’ve loved every day of it. So if you want a career that provides a different challenge every day, and the opportunity to travel and meet people world-wide, then yes this is for you with one important caveat: Aviation is not a ‘9 till 5’ world, and you need to be willing and able to respond to events as and when they occur, either individually or as part of a team. But, if you are the sort of person who would find that challenging and exciting, then the rewards are great.
