On 23 August 2017, passing slightly to the south of Hong Kong, severe typhoon Hato saw powerful easterly winds up to 190km/h combined with a one-metre storm surge and high tides to create significant storm and flood damage in Hong Kong. Crossing the shallow waters of the Pearl River estuary, the winds and the storm surge increased further and devastated Macau, where the low-lying areas were inundated, reportedly to depths of two metres.
Currently, there are 12 reported fatalities, more than 150 injuries, a territory-wide power blackout, and disrupted telecom and water supplies made it the most damaging typhoon to hit this location in over half a century. Clear up has begun after this devastating storm.
