Authorities and aid agencies continue to struggle to manage the aftermath of Category 5 Typhoon Haiyan (named “Yolanda” in the Philippines), which passed over the Visayas Region of the Philippines last week.
The capital of the island of Leyte, Tacloban City has captured most of the headlines due to the desperate plight of its citizens. However, the recorded level of death and destruction is rising on the southern coasts of Samar, the island located to the east of Leyte. Basey Town, on the coast, East of Tacloban, the local press has reported a death toll of over 400, according to figures published in today’s edition of the “Philippine Daily Inquirer”.
Aircraft are now delivering aid in to Tacloban City and the police and military are starting to bring order. Commercial flights have yet to commence, although adjusters are now able to access Ormoc on the West Coast of Leyte via fast ferry from Cebu. Cebu is an hour flight from Manila.
Our initial response team is now receiving instructions from the Philippines and international markets and have mobilized themselves in Cebu ready for immediate deployment as soon as access is gained and/or authorities allow.
