Underground control of well incident

SITUATION

While drilling an 8½ inch hole section of deepwater exploration well, an underground control of well incident occurred.

SCENARIO

Difficult well control operations were enacted resulting in the abandonment of the lower section of the open hole wellbore. Sidetrack drilling of the well was made to the original well control incident depth. An additional string of liner was run and cemented to cover weak, upper formations prior to drilling into high pressure zone.

OUTCOME

The McLarens team involved all stakeholders (Insured, Broker, Insurers) to resolve the operational issues resulting in agreement on well control and sidetrack drilling periods. Necessary adjustments were enacted as per the Policy Wording, Terms and Conditions. The claim was settled a mere seven months from date of instruction.
